The Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival was started in September of 1987 in Annapolis Maryland.
The ancestor of the author Alex Haley, Kunta Kinte , was born in in the village of Juffure in Gambia West Africa in 1750.
One day in 1767, when young Kunta left his village to search for wood to make a drum, he was captured, gagged and bound then put on a ship for the three month journey to America.
He was one of 98 slaves brought to Annapolis aboard the ship Lord Ligonier in 1767, sold to a Virginian slaveowner called Master Reynolds.

We know that there are many such celebrations going on all over this country, but this is a celebration of a man that never forgot his heritage, regardless of how the slave masters tried to break him. He was determined to be an African.
