Family Affair

Keitt|Sapp|Shumake|McRae|McMillian|Clark|Ryal - All from Georgia

This site was created to chronicle and share my genealogy research. It is also a tool for others that are searching for their family members and to see if there is any connection to my family. This is a project that is going to take years to complete. It has been a labor of love, a great deal of fun and quite stimulating.

If you are interested in the various surnames, you can start with the ones across the top of this page or you can look for them in the categories section to the right.

Recorded in the spellings of Parkins, Perkins, and the rare Purkins, this ancient surname is medieval English, but of Old French and ultimately Greek origins. It is a patronymic from the personal name 'Piers or Pierre' through the later Peter or Peterkin. Introduced into Britain at the Norman Invasion of 1066, and also by the Crusaders of the 12th century on their return from the Holy Land, it consists of the basic 'Per or Par' with the two additive diminutives, 'kin', indicating close relationship, such as son, or nephew, and the plural 's', a shortened form of 'son'.

My Connection:
My great great grandmother, Mary Perkin was born May 1851 in Jenkins County.  I don't have much knowledge of her parents, but I believe her mother's maiden name was Reese and her dad's name was either Dave or Vergie Perkins.

She is believe to have been the daughter of a slave owner, who was said to be the man that Perkins Georgia was named after.

She married George Washington Sapp(1834-1914), who was also said to be a white man, and they had 17 known children, Enoch, George, Judson, David, Walter, Jack, Street (my great grandfather), Mungeon, Philip, Robert, Dock, Minnie, Lillie,Thomas, Dewey, Matthew, and possibly a William J.

Mary Perkins is the first connection for me to the Perkins name.  She is said to be the daughter of the man who Perkins, Georgia is named for.  This is a surname that I have not even touched yet, there has just been so much to do and learn before getting there.
