By the 2000 US Census 75.26% of those with this family name identified themselves as being white, 18.14% as black, undisclosed % as Asian and Pacific Islander, 4.38% as American Indian and Native Alaskan, undisclosed % as two or more races, and 1.46% as Hispanic ethnic origin.
It is my understanding that the origin of Shewmake is German, but that is all that I have gotten thus far. There are many spellings of this name, but Shewmake and Shumake are the most notable spelling
My Connection:
My Great Grandmother Ella Shumake was born July 29, 1885 in Jenkins County, Georgia to Priscilla and Henry Warpool Shumake. Ella had six siblings, one I was told was her twin and later told that they were not twins, but they looked so much alike until it was hard to tell them apart, as I remember; her name was Julia, then there was Billy, Joe, William,Carrie, and Joseph.
Ella married Street Turner Sapp and they had four children, Wardeen, Rosco, Irene (my paternal grandmother) and Vivian.
